My youngest son is a Mt. Dew junkie. It saddens me too say. I wouldn’t touch the stuff with a 10 foot pole! Do you know how much sugar is in Mt. Dew? By weight, if you filled up a 20 oz. bottle with sugar, Dew has the equivilant of 1/4 of the bottle filled with sugar. Don’t believe me? Google it!

When he was an early teen, we had a family member that would sneak him Mt. Dew. He gained a considerable amount of weight and was categorized as obese. I had to put my foot down and threatened, “No MORE DEW!!
After that he lost weight, rapidly and is back to his thin self, still, many years later!

Long story short, for a treat in the summer I will make him some fruit flavored teas. This Blackberry Tea is one of his favorites! You can make it with a blackberry simple syrup, sweetened to your liking. I have tried honey, white sugar and raw sugar and they are all good!

If you’d like to make an Unsweetened Blackberry Tea, follow the instructions for the simple syrup, omitting the sugar, or just use concentrated blackberry juice, at half of the amount.

Is Blackberry Tea Good For You?

That question totally depends on how much, and which kind of sugar you choose to make your Blackberry Tea with. I prefer my Tea unsweetened, so there are a few advantages to adding this tea to your diet, if unsweetened. Depending on who you ask, there are some health benefits to drinking black tea. This article from Healthline, goes over 10 benefits.

Blackberries have lots of health benefits, as well, including antioxidants and tons of vitamin C!

If you choose to sweeten your tea with local honey, there are also lots of health benefits there. Including, lessening of seasonal allergies!

Comparatively speaking, between Blackberry Tea and Soft Drinks, Blackberry Tea is a much better choice to add to your diet, even with white sugar, the way this recipe is written. There are 400 grams of sugar in the recipe and almost 1200 grams in an equal amount of Mt. Dew.

How to Make Blackberry Tea

  1. Make simple syrup or blackberry juice. Add sugar to large pot. (omit for unsweetened blackberry tea.)
  2. Add water and blackberries.
  3. Bring to boil. Reduce heat.
  4. Cook for 10-30 minutes (time not crucial)
  5. Strain solids through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth lined colander. Discard.
  6. Drain into bowl or large measuring cup. Discard waste.

Make sun tea, or boil water and let tea bags steep for 5 minutes. Mix with equal amount of cold water.
Add 2 cups (473ml) blackberry simple syrup or juice with tea to make one gallon (3.8L). (You will need 14 cups (3.31L) of tea.)

Place in a pitcher and refrigerate for at least a week.

This blackberry tea is made from blackberries we forage. If you’d like to try another delicious foraged tea, try this pine needle tea. It’s a bit citrusy from the pine needles.

Ingredients

  • 1 batch blackberry simple syrup see below for recipe
  • 2 tea bags iced tea sized, black tea, orange pekoe, green tea, earl grey tea, ginger tea, your choice

Instructions

  • Brew tea. Boil water. Add tea bags to a pitcher or large container. Pour in water. Stir with a wooden spoon. Let stand at least 5 minutes.
  • Once tea has brewed, discard tea bags.
  • Add simple syrup to brewed tea. Let stand 2 hours. Serve cold.
  • Pour tea into serving glasses over ice. Garnish with fresh mint leaves or mint sprigs and fresh, whole blackberries.
