What you Need

  • Corn or flour tortillas: Use the freshest tortillas you can find. We stay away from bargain brands. If you have a Hispanic store in your area, that is a great place to find quality tortillas.
  • Cooking spray or olive oil: Cooking spray contains fewer calories, but drizzling and tossing it in olive or, better yet, peanut oil will be reminiscent of freshly fried chips.
  • Salt: Just a pinch of sea salt or kosher salt sprinkled on them when they come out of the air fryer.

Why These Tortilla Chips Work

  • They only take about six minutes to make in your air fryer.
  • These chips have less saturated fat than traditional fried chips.
  • They also contain less salt than bagged chips.
  • They can be made ahead and served hot or cold.
  • We find corn chips far superior to flour.
  • They taste like our favorite local restaurant-style tortilla chips
  • Low in fat and cholesterol. Plus they’re gluten-free
  • Customize these chips with your own blend of spices and flavorings!

Optional Flavor Variations

  • Chipotle Powder: This will give you a smoky, spicy chip.
  • Garlic Powder: You can mix garlic, onion powder, cumin, and herbs with Mexican oregano or cilantro.
  • Nacho Cheese Flavor: Nutritional yeast, garlic powder, paprika and chili powder.
  • Chili Powder: Chili powder is a mixture of various dried peppers that is not smoked. So, it will add the heat but not the smokiness.
  • Lime Juice: For a bit of zing. These chips would be great to accompany a margarita or daiquiri.
  • Ranch Seasoning: Just toss them in ranch seasoning for cool ranch-flavored chips.
  • Cinnamon and Sugar: Make a batch and toss them in a mixture of cinnamon and sugar for a quick dessert for a taco bar.

How to Make Tortilla Chips

Cut good quality tortillas into 6 or 8 pie-shaped pieces with a pizza cutter or a sharp knife. Stack 5-6 tortillas on top of each other to cut a lot at a time.

Arrange chips on the basket so that they don’t touch. Spray with nonstick cooking spray, or lightly brush with olive, avocado, vegetable, or peanut oil. Sprinkle with salt.

Preheat the air fryer to 300°F. Air fry for 3-4 minutes on the first side. Remove from air fryer. Carefully flip with tongs. Continue to air fry for another 3 minutes, until golden brown on the edges and crispy.

How to Use Them

  • Dips: like guacamole, salsa, bean dip, etc.
  • Nachos:
  • Snacking – they are so much better for you than potato chips
  • Chilaquiles: Chilaquiles is a fun dish to serve for breakfast or brunch. It is so much better with fresh chips!

Pro Tips

  • To store chips, place them in an airtight container. Store on the counter or cupboard.
  • They can be made a day before they are needed.
  • To reheat, place in a warm oven and bake for about five minutes, or serve cold.
  • Use high-quality, thick tortillas for the best results. Cheaper varieties are not as good.
  • You can use white corn tortillas, blue corn tortillas, yellow corn tortillas, or flour tortillas. Use whole grains tortillas for an even tastier option.
  • They will last 2-3 days (if they last that long!).
