Apple Grilled Cheese
This Apple Grilled Cheese with Raisin Bread is a delicious lunch or dinner and takes less than ten minutes to cook. The sharp cheddar adds a great bite, and this sandwich is great for both kids and adults.

This is one of our favorite grilled cheese sandwiches. The sweet cinnamon raisin bread paired with the tart apples and sharp cheddar cheese is a burst of flavor in your mouth. It only has four ingredients and is made in less than 10 minutes in the air fryer or a skillet on the stove.
What you Need
- Raisin bread: Use homemade or store-bought bread; if you can find a cinnamon raisin bread, it pairs very well with the tart apples.
- Apple: You can use your favorite apples or whatever you have in the house. We love a tart apple like Granny Smith, but a sweet one like Honeycrisp apples is equally delicious.
- Cheeses: Use a sharp cheddar cheese for flavor, with a slice of American cheese for its great melting capacity, or use whatever you have on hand. Harvarti and Gouda work well, too.
- Fat: We prefer mayonnaise because it produces the best crunchy exterior, but butter or ghee can be used as a substitute in a pinch.

How to Make Them

Halve your apple. Remove the core from the center with a sharp paring knife. If you’d like to peel the, do so, but the skin is high in fiber and nutrients.

Slice the apples into thin wedges.

Spread mayonnaise in a thin layer on one side of each bread slice. If you use butter, use very soft butter, or brush melted butter on one side.

Place the bread on a parchment paper-covered air fryer basket with the mayonnaise side down. Add the slice of American cheese.

Arrange the apple slices on top of the cheese.

Add thinly sliced sharp cheddar to the top of the apple slices.

Top the sandwich with the other slice of bread.

Air fry at 350°F for 4-5 minutes until the top is golden brown. Flip the sandwich halfway through. Continue to air fry for 4-5 more minutes until the second side is golden.
Stovetop Instructions
Assemble the sandwich as described above. Use a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Carefully place the sandwiches in the skillet. You should hear a sizzle. When the sizzling slows down or stops, the sandwich is ready to flip. It usually takes 4-5 minutes, depending on your heat level.
Carefully flip the sandwich with a pancake turner and brown the other side of the bread. Once it’s browned, remove it from the pan and serve.
Variations
- If you don’t like raisin bread, consider substituting another type, such as brioche or sourdough bread.
- Add meat to the sandwich, such as bacon, ham or prosciutto.
- Use a sharp white cheddar.
