How to Store Tomatoes for Maximum Flavor
The thing many people get wrong is that they store tomatoes in the fridge. Cold temperatures rob tomatoes of their bright, fresh flavor and water content.
The best place to store tomatoes is on the counter at room temperature. They are juicier and more flavorful.
In the summer, place them in a fruit-storage organza bag to minimize fruit fly activity. In the winter, you don’t need the bag.
When I pick tomatoes that still need to ripen a bit, I put them on the kitchen windowsills. They ripen perfectly. You can do this with store-bought tomatoes in the winter as well.
Even though the tomatoes have been previously refrigerated, you can bring back some of the fresh flavor. Are they the same as summer tomatoes? No. But better than the hard, flavorless grocery store tomatoes in February.
